Tony Fitzsimmons completed an artist-in-residence program with Umbrella in 2019-2020. It was focussed on the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) in the waters off Townsville. This exhibition builds on the artist’s experiences while working onsite prior to deployment of The Coral Greenhouse at John Brewer Reef. Fitzsimmons has reinterpreted the MOUA sculptures, installations, sites and building process from documentation to his own paintings and drawings.

Exhibitions launch
6pm Friday 7 October 2022
A Coral Garden will open alongside 3 other exhibitions: Jan Hynes - Encaged, The Print Council of Australia (PCA) - Print Commission 2022, and Japurra Ngapa-jirra by artists from Maningrida Arts & Culture. | Anne Cole will also be presenting a body of work in our showcase cabinet. | Invite your friends to the launch and RSVP to the Facebook event here.

Murky Waters Studio will also be launching 'SKULLDUGGERY' from 5:30pm for a 6pm start, so this is a great chance to visit both galleries for an art-filled evening! We encourage you to visit Murky Waters Studio first to make it to Umbrella in time for our artist speeches at 7pm. Murky Waters Studio is located at 126 Hanran St, opposite McDonalds down the laneway beside Jax Tyres.

Tony Fitzsimmons has exhibited in the Percival Portrait Painting Prize since 2010. In 2014 his work won both the drawing and oil painting sections of the Townsville Art Society Annual Awards. He has held solo exhibitions in Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts and Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, and participated in many group exhibitions in North Queensland. He was an artist in residence at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales in 2015, and participated in the 2017 and 2019 PUNQ / Pop Up North Queensland festivals.
