Studio Residencies

Umbrella Studio was planning to call for proposals for our 2020 Grand Hotel Townsville Artist in Residence program, however due to COVID-19 we are pivoting our program to At Home Residencies. See here for more details.

We hope to re-launch our studio residencies program again soon with the details as follows:

Umbrella Studio’s makerspace provides a flexible space for visual artists to develop new work in any medium. The spaces are suited for interdisciplinary artists and those who have an interest in self directed approach to research and development. We welcome proposals from individuals or artistic collaborations that push the boundaries of their medium, are conceptually, formally or technologically ambitious and which contribute to current cultural or art form developments. We consider all proposals in the context of our endeavour to provide a rich, varied and high quality program. Umbrella staff will be available to provide mentoring support while the artist is in residence.

Umbrella strongly encourages proposals from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and linguistically diverse and differently-abled artists.  Should you require support or an alternate proposal method to meet your needs please contact us. If you are a non-Indigenous artist and your proposed artworks for exhibition containing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander subject matter you will need to explain your process for obtaining permission to use Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property.  Excellent resources to support you in this can be found here and here.
