Susan and Peter Stein

Yunbenun / Magnetic Island has an unusually large number of talented people working in a variety of artistic fields. Island Living in Nelly Bay displays beautiful handmade pottery by local Magnetic Island resident Peter Dechantsreiter and also has a manufacturing jeweller onsite. Peter Stein has been manufacturing one off jewellery pieces for 20 years on Yunbenun / Magnetic Island and has an eclectic collection of truly unique creations.

Recently, Island Living has refurbished a large selection of the shop to create a dedicated Art Gallery specifically for the local artists to showcase their amazing work. Artists work in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolours, acrylics and photo art. The gallery currently exhibits work from 10 Yunbenun / Magnetic Island artists, with new artists joining daily.

About The Artist

Peter Stein

Peter Stein has lived on Yunbenun / Magnetic Island for 24 years and has embraced living in such a beautiful environment. He has drawn inspiration from the varied landscapes and sensational sunsets experienced on the island.

Originally from England, Peter studied 3-Dimensional Design at Art college making one off sculptures and artisan furniture pieces. He has travelled extensively all over the world and has spent a number of years in Garramilla / Darwin and Western Australia.

As well as producing original oil and watercolour paintings, showcasing the local environment, Peter also specializes in producing one off jewellery art pieces.

David Wilkinson

David has had a lifelong love of the outdoors from an early age. His paintings are chiefly driven by a love of the natural environment and interest in history. David’s compositions are often evocative of time spent in favourite places’ usually walking, kayaking or cycling.

Having originally studied geology, David worked in oil & gas exploration, environmental consulting and the aluminium industry.

Originally from the UK, David has travelled quite extensively, has had spells living in in Australia and Switzerland, returning from the UK to settle in Gurambilbarra / Townsville with his Australian wife in 2020. He first discovered a passion for painting in 2019 when he tried dabbling with oils and acrylics.  He is self-taught and continues to learn (an artistic flare does also run in the Wilkinson family, including an ancestor Norman Wilkinson who designed the dazzle camouflage painting on British shipping in WWI).

The feeling of the setting drives how he paints, the colour, light, heat, texture. The geological setting is also significant, the ancient age of some of the settings is very much part of the atmosphere which influences what and how David chooses to paint. To date David’s work has been displayed in several galleries in NQ.

Jan Malkin

Jan is a Yunbenun / Magnetic Island based artist with a unique artistic span, working in many mediums and styles, always playing with fresh ideas. Jan has won prizes for drawing and wood carving and joined a group of artists in the UK, holding small exhibitions in the North East of England. After arriving in Australia, Jan found the intense colours of inks and acylics captured the tropical vividness around her. Since moving to Yunbenun / Magnetic Island, Jan opened her own studio in Nelly Bay.
