Travelling by String: Making journey markers from what life gives us.
Join Bernadette Boscacci to create playful and functional art objects while embracing a wabi-sabi aesthetic and recycling ethos at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts.
This workshop which runs in conjunction with Boscacci’s exhibition Travelling by String will be held on 22 September 2019 from 9:30 am – 12.30pm. It will be held in the exhibition space at Umbrella’s temporary location, downstairs 380 Flinders St, Townsville.
Participants will be lead through a series of individually focussed activities:
1. Create unique drawing/painting tools from an assortment of found natural and synthetic materials such as sticks, plant fibre, bones, wire, fur, line and string.
2. Learn and practice weaving techniques with found and recycled materials, such as wire, rope and cords to develop a small woven vessel.
3. Use the handmade drawing materials to create a large, spontaneous group drawing (ink on paper) which will serve as a map / travellers’ tale upon which to position your vessel as marker.
A group discussion and critique will follow these activities. Participants will be encouraged to document their process / finished works, and to take home their individual art objects.
Materials and equipment will be provided by the artist and gallery; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own found or recycled materials to incorporate into their works. Please bring your cameras or phones to document your process and finished works.
Bernadette Boscacci is an Australian artist based in North Queensland. Her arts practice is interdisciplinary and spans multiple media. Her works are well-crafted and present her unique perspective on her environment and the current climate. Over the past 30 years Bernadette has interwoven her studio-based practice with her professional arts and environmental education, community cultural development and allied health work in Australia and beyond. She is excited about continuing to do more of the same, into the future. Travelling by String is on display until 22 September, so this will also be the last opportunity to see the works in person and meet with the artist.
