Insiders is a site-specific interactive video installation that reflects on the curious time of pandemic and sudden self-isolation at home, which, simultaneously became a place of safety and confinement. Katya Venter uses references to pop culture to map her experiences of Townsville, a town she had only known through a cartoon several years ago, which she has settled down in and envisioning a future. This work is a dialogue between real and imaginary, between past and the way spontaneous isolation forced the artist to acknowledge the present and the meaning of home.
Please note there is limited accessibility for this exhibition, as there is one staircase leading to the room (or access via the rear door on Ogden St), then a step up into the room. Please call Umbrella staff prior to your visit if you would like to discuss your options and arrange a time to access the space via our rear door. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope you can make it in to the see the project. If not, please check back soon to see digital documentation of the space.
Commissioned through Creative Sparks, this project receives generous support from the Regional Arts Development Fund. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and the Townsville City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
