Wear Your Art
DESIGN IT, PRINT IT, WEAR IT. T-shirt printing with John Bradshaw and Shane Keen. For $15 participants got the opportunity to come along to any one, or all, of the four workshop days (12, 13, 16 & 17/4/08), and walk away wearing their work. The workshop covered the full process on T-shirt printing, and a re-print and exhibition is in the works for November '08.
The Nature of Thuringowa
Reflecting the nature of Thuringowa in sculpture was the focus of a free workshop for young people between the ages of 15-25. Young artists who were interested in developing their artistic skills had the opportunity to work with two established Thuringowa artists to create a site specific installation from recycled materials which was placed on the grounds at Riverway Art Centre for public viewing at 2pm on Wednesday 23 January 2008.
Thinking outside the sketch pad
Angela Hughes artist talk and sketch workshop
Date: Wednesday 17 October '07
Time: 5-7pm
Place: Umbrella Studio – Access Space
Angela Hughes is an emerging artist who has been included in several group exhibitions, but The Seventh Noir was her first solo show in Townsville.
To complement the exhibition, a free artist talk/workshop was held in the Access Space. Participants were invited to do sketches on a surface of their choice. From wallpaper, to old curtains, to canvas, to shoes - just as long as they were thinking outside the sketch pad.
TAG Launch
Date: Friday 7 September '07
Time: 4-7pm
Place: Umbrella Studio Downstairs & Rear of the Building (from Ogden Street Entrance)
The TAG Launch was aimed at people aged 15-25. More specifically young and emerging artists from high schools, TAFE, JCU and the general community. Part of the idea behind TAG, is that the JCU, TAFE, and working artists (such as those who painted the wall) get to share their thoughts, ideas and experiences with students still in high school. It gives students a good idea of what it is like to pursue a job in the arts after graduation. It also gives students a learning experience from a wider group than just their teachers, and all the young people involved get to make friends, learn techniques and different styles of art.
Those who are a few years out of school got to share their passion for expression with others. It is one thing for art to be looked at, and another thing altogether for it to be appreciated, and TAG focuses on the latter.
As for what people did on the night, the main focus was on the spray painters. It was about being able to see art in action and the people who do it. There were also logos on display created by first year students studying a Bachelor of New Media Arts with a focus on Digital Media Design from the JCU School of Creative Arts. There were about 40 logos on display - with 4 available to vote on. Out of those 4, Amy Ito's logo won. It became the new logo for TAG, and is now featured on posters, fliers, the Enewlsetter and anything TAG related.
There was also music from Ska'd for Life and the Math Loth Loloply (some brilliant improvisation performances), light refreshments (food and drink), and paper on some of the walls with pens provided for those who wanted to have a go at expressing themselves and draw something too. It was mainly, above all else, an opportunity for young people to meet other young people interested in art.
Pizza and Paste-Ups
Date: Wednesday 30 May '07
Time: 5-7pm
Place: Umbrella Studio Downstairs
Cost: $6 per person
A great way to enjoy Wednesday
Following the success of “Off the Wall”, Umbrella had another great youth event. This time it was a Paste-Ups and pizza workshop.
But what are Paste-ups? Paste-Ups are like stickers, only they are wheat pasted onto a surface, and tend to be much bigger. Local artist Shane Keen headed up the workshop and taught people how to make their own!
Okay then, but why the pizza? Pizza and coke was included because we all know that meeting new people, showing off creativity, and having fun can leave you pretty hungry.
Off The Wall
Off the wall was a free celebration featuring some of Townsville’s finest Hip Hop artists including the likes of BluTag, DLT, and Butter.
Inside the galleries car park an aerosol art demonstration took place, where Graff Artists; Douglas Arana and Simon Fleming free-styled a mural and made it go pop! whilst artist Shane Keen facilitated an open art session where participants could respond to the audio and visuals of off the wall with mixed media and young people could have their say on current youth issues.
From this event a database of interested young parties was created and Umbrella's Tag Initiative was born...
Off the wall was a partnership project between Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts and Community Cultural Development, Townsville City Council. Former Trainee of Umbrella Studio Jackie Jakovljevic co-coordinated the project and staged off the wall as a 2007 National Youth Week Event.
