AFCM Concert at Umbrella Studio
Sunday afternoon 2 August at 2pm a free concert at Umbrella Studio launches the Australia Festival of Chamber Music. Two contemporary works by a North Queensland composer will be premiered...
The afternoon concert will premiere 2 original compositions by North Queensland composer and James Cook University lecturer, Dr. David Salisbury. Both works have been written for AFCM and William Barton and Timothy Constable.
MAGNETIC REFLECTIONS
An original composition by Dr. David Salisbury, lecturer in the School of Creative Arts at James Cook University. The title of the movement, Horseshoe Bay is scored for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, Cello, Marimba and Didgeridoo. The composition uses some minimalist concepts with several layers to build up a more complex texture as well as a very free flowing odd metre of 7/8.
SUITE BROLGA
A composition that was inspired by a traditional Aboriginal story of how the Brolga came to be. Printmaker Shirley Collin, a Pitta-Pitta woman, narrates this ancient Dreamtime story. Both were composed for William Barton on didgeridoo, Tim Constable on tuned percussion, Serenata Flute Quartet and Salisbury on clarinet. C Sections of the composition are based on George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic concepts for the harmonic and melodic content. There are improvised sections integrated into the score, in which some of the instruments interpret characters in the story musically. This piece runs approximately 21 minutes in duration.
The concert will be presented in the Main Space Gallery of Umbrella Studio alongside the exhibition 'Tracks of the Past/Printing the Future': showcases works on paper from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island printmakers who live and work in the region and participants of the ’08, ’09 Master classes at Umbrella.
