Staff include a full-time Director, full-time Administrator, full-time Business Administration Trainee and casual Technical Officer. As well as contracting artists, writers and curators, Umbrella is also committed to engaging interested individuals in all facets of the organisation, through active participation in its thriving membership and volunteer program.
I have worked in the creative arts most of my life. I went into business with my first art gallery in beautiful Sedona, Arizona at the energetic age of 23 and eventually owned several commercial art galleries in the USA before moving to Australia in 1994. I completed a Master of Arts at Monash University, in anthropology/museum studies and for 8 years worked in Sydney for World Vision Australia, as Director of Walkabout Art, a micro-enterprise development project fundraising for World Vision Australia’s Indigenous Programs. Over the years I have participated in the development of exciting performing and visual arts projects. My personal creative outlet is performing; I sing jazz and compose with my partner, a saxophonist and ethnomusicologist.
In early 2009 I successfully applied for the Business Administration Traineeship at Umbrella Studio. I was fortunate enough to get the job and started work as of March. Since then I’ve not only become more proficient in the Business Administration aspects of my job but can also claim to have somewhat of a proficiency in web and general design, hanging artwork, public speaking and more. I’ve also become more immersed in the local arts culture, participating in a local group exhibition. My favourite medium is sculpture but I enjoy experimenting with other media for unexpected results.
I started out at Umbrella Studio as a Business Administration Trainee after graduating from high school. After two years of TAFE and full-time work I finished up, only to come back on board as a Casual Technical Officer. The three days a week I’m at Umbrella I assist with design, web management and development, marketing, projects, curatorial duties, multimedia, admin or whatever else is needed. The other four days of the week I’m an artist working across several different fields, including photography, pen and ink, literature, painting, digital, film, design and mixed media.
