Umbrella Studio is located in an open and inviting building in the central business district of Townsville. Our address at 482 Flinders Street puts us in close proximity with other tourist attractions, office buildings, shops and accommodation. The premises were built for the Townsville Gas & Coke Company Ltd in 1936, who used it for showrooms and offices. The building was designed by architect A.B Cecil Dyer who planned 12 buildings in Townsville's city centre. After being left vacant for many years, Umbrella Studio has brought new life to this historic building.

Spaces

Public access to our building is from Flinders Street West, leading straight into our split level gallery spaces that feature dark wooden floors, high ceilings and professional track lighting. The Main Space offers a large open area for the presentation of significant contemporary visual arts exhibitions and events, including a moveable exhibition wall. On the upper split-level is the Access Space, which offers a smaller exhibition space for emerging contemporary artists and The Vault, best suited to installation works. Please see our exhibition guidelines and floor plan for more detail. These gallery areas also provide an excellent venue for private functions.
