Broken Spirit . 30 Jan - 8 March

Larry Underwood (Main Space)

broken spirit image

A visual documentary providing insight into the recording, production and design of Broken Spirit's first new release in 15 years: Thinning the Predators

The album will be officially launched by Bank Court Studio CEO Anthony Edwards on Friday 30 January 2009 at 7pm

Industrial metal goes back to its roots

Larry Underwood left the world of music a broken man. Battered and beaten by his own addictions he was force by not only by the media but the courts to withdraw and seek help for his numerous addictions. What is unique about Underwood thought is that when he left the world for rehab he did not return immediately like the countless lifestyle ‘die hards’ that now pepper the content of every music rag. He just disappeared and nothing was heard, seen or mentioned of him for 15 years. He became one of the departed and stories of his antics became the stuff of myths and legends over this time, but he is now back. If the initial reviews of his latest Broken Spirit album Thinning the Predators can be believed Larry is harder, faster, and louder then the man of old.

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design recognise and promote excellence in senior visual arts education throughout Queensland state and non-state schools.

Previously known as the Education Minister's Awards for Excellence in Art, this program has been conducted annually since 1990 and has helped raise community awareness about the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of arts education in Queensland secondary schools.

The program comprises:

  • submission of digital photographs of student artwork via a secure website for consideration by the Teacher Selection Panel and State Selection Panel;
  • 10 regional exhibitions showcasing the work submitted, including short-listed artworks;
  • a central exhibition in Brisbane and a touring exhibition of the selected work to regional galleries across Queensland; and
  • a five-day residential workshop (September school holidays) for award recipients, conducted by professional artists.
  • Umbrella Studio is the host of one of the 10 regional exhibitions.

    Elevating the Spirit . 24 April - 31 May

    Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch (Main Space)

    ..."In Elevating the Spirit, connections, relationships and unity are explored through visual language elements and symbology, between one's inner-self (soul, spirit, life-force, essence), psyche and the outer world. Notions of passage, transition (change), duality, reflection, containment and synthesis (fusion) are contemplated and reflected upon.

    In mixed mediums, using techniques such as stitching, painting, collage, drawing, printmaking and assemblage, this body of abstract work references, expands and transits into new exploratory directions, sizes and forms, from previous work related to the Book of threads (process journal); it acknowledges and celebrates the spirit 'creating' and giving existence to matter..." - extract from Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch statement
