Mary Barrett

Mary has been painting and drawing for as long as she can remember, and now works mainly in oils and watercolour. Mary’s formal training began with children’s art classes with Joyce Hyam at Brisbane Technical College in the early 1960s. During the last 10 years, Mary has studied at intermediate and advanced levels at the Brisbane Institute of Art, West Wollongong TAFE, the Moulin de Perrot Ecole de Peinture (France), the Julian Ashton School (Sydney), and the National Art School (Sydney).

Mary enjoys all subject areas and, because overseas travel is part of her job, has painted ‘en plein air’ in many parts of the world. Her general aim is to capture the special qualities of her surroundings at high speed, before her plane, train or bus leaves! She enjoys painting outside in Townsville, and sets up a still life indoors when the sun is too fierce.

Mary’s group and solo exhibitions include:
2006 Dept of Fine Arts, West Wollongong TAFE – student exhibition
2005 Dept of Fine Arts, West Wollongong TAFE – student exhibition
