I consider myself a basket maker, continuing the traditions of women using traditional techniques and plant fibre to create my work. I mainly use plant fibres collected from Townsville gardens but I have been influenced by our contemporary life style and do sometimes introduce manufactured materials into my work. Also, my baskets aren’t traditional shapes but are more sculptural forms. In my work I am interested in the relationships of humans and other animals with their environment and often my baskets are modeled on things I see in nature. As I mainly use plant material, I enjoy the fact that the works will not last forever and will eventually deteriorate and be returned to the garden. Teaching others these traditions and working collaboratively with others is an important part of my art making.
