Umbrella Studio invites exhibition proposals from established and emerging contemporary visual artists and curators seeking to present new and original artwork in a professional gallery environment.

Exhibition Space Details

Umbrella Studio operates three exhibition spaces: the Main Space, the Access Space and the Vault. Each space offers a different environment and has different terms of use. These spaces are also available for hire.

The Main Space offers a large gallery/exhibition space within Umbrella Studio for the presentation of significant contemporary visual arts exhibitions and events. View the Floorplan

Terms of Use

For all exhibitions in the Main Space, Umbrella Studio provides:

  • Standard full colour invitations
  • 100 additional invitations for the artist’s own distribution
  • Media release
  • Exhibition signage
  • Opening night catering
  • Multiple media listings
  • An artist fee

The Access Space offers a smaller exhibition space for emerging contemporary visual artists, particularly those seeking their first solo or group exhibition experience in a professional gallery environment. It is also suited to established artists seeking to exhibit experimental artforms. View the Floorplan

Terms of Use

Artists exhibiting in the Access Space are responsible for all costs associated with the presentation of the exhibition including:

  • Design and printing of invitations and catalogues
  • Labels and exhibition signage
  • The hire or purchase of any specialised display equipment

To minimise cost and maximise attendance Access Space openings are generally held in conjunction with Main Space openings. Artists wishing to hold exhibition openings outside of these times are responsible for catering and other associated costs.

  • Catering for openings and other events

Studio Downstairs

The Studio Downstairs will accommodate a wide range of activities including:

  • Black box space for film and theatre
  • Raw space for workshops
  • Classroom and meeting room
  • Special function venue
  • Exhibition space

It is available to hire for community groups for short-term residencies, workshops, meetings and classes. The space is conveniently located in the city, near public transport and ample street parking, as well as access for deliveries. It is equipped with limited storage for art, sculpture and works on paper. It is equipped with amenities such as a toilet and a small kitchenette. The Studio holds our Resource Library in a comfortable and quiet environment. In addition there is printmaking and ceramics equipment, a printing press, some artist tools, bench tops and good lighting with a hanging system.

The Studio encourages professional development by supporting the creation of new work; facilitate workshops and other community events that serve to forward the arts. The Studio is used to develop exhibitions encourage emerging curators, facilitate critical debate, and support a wide range endeavours to encourage a viable local arts community.

General Terms of Use

For events in all spaces, Umbrella Studio will provide:

  • Mailout/postage to members, arts organisations and media
  • Media release
  • Hanging and basic installation materials
  • Supervision of artwork/gallery during business hours
  • Administration of artwork sales (a 30% administration fee/commission is to be included in the sale price)
  • After hours security system, linked to a security provider
  • Assistance with the installation of the exhibition
  • A licensed bar service for the purchase of beverages at gallery openings and events

For all spaces exhibiting artists are responsible for:

  • Installation and demounting of the exhibition
  • Providing Umbrella Studio with an artist statement and label information
  • Returning the gallery to its' original condition at the completion of the show

Note: Umbrella Studio reserves up to four places in its annual exhibition program for graduating and Honors student exhibitions. With the exception of postage for the gallery mailout and basic installation materials, students are responsible for all costs associated with their exhibition.
